Faith in Action: Sterling

Sterling is a historic African-American community on the west side of Greenville.  For more than ten years, Christ Church has maintained a focus on work in this area.  Once the home of Sterling High School and still a focal point of legacy and memory, the neighborhood continues to deal with many of the urban challenges of poverty.

Ten years ago, Christ Church was instrumental in creating the Sterling Hope Center.  Now in partnership with the YMCA, the Hope Center offers afterschool programs, summer camp, senior programs and other neighborhood services.

Christ Church parishioners also are actively engaged with the afterschool programs at the Sterling Community Center.

In terms of broader community revitalization, stability, and sustainability, the parish is a partner in the Phoenix League and is working with the promising Sterling Land Trust to develop new opportunities for the people of Sterling.
