A Community Service in the Park
Sunday, May 21, 10:30 AM, Falls Park in Downtown Greenville
Who is invited?
Everyone! Whether you are a newcomer, a Christ Church parishioner, or just someone who loves gospel music and the gospel, we would love to worship with you.
Why are we having a service in Falls Park?
Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry, stated in an address to the Episcopal church that “in this environment in which we live, the church can no longer wait for its congregation to come to it, the church must go where the congregation is.” This service is an opportunity for us to go to the community and share life in Jesus Christ.
What is different this year, and why is it called Gospel in the Park?
The theme of “Gospel in the Park” points both to the music we are using for the service (familiar upbeat gospel tunes) and the fact that our goal is to bring the Gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ, to our community in word and sacrament. Music will be provided by members of the Music Ministry of Christ Church.
What is evangelism and why is it important?
Evangelism, or the “E” word, can be very intimidating and often conjures up images of people catching you on the street corner or knocking on your door. The definition of evangelism is the spreading of the Christian gospel by public preaching or personal witness. Christ calls us in Matthew 28:19-20 to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
What should I bring/wear?
Wear comfortable clothes and shoes: shorts and flip-flops are acceptable. Remember to bring your hat and sunscreen, as well as a picnic blanket or chairs.
Where is Falls Park?
Falls Park is located in downtown Greenville along the Reedy River just below the Liberty Bridge and Falls Cottage. Shakespeare in the Park performs in the same location.
What time should I arrive at Falls Park?
Plan to arrive in the park by 10:15 AM to give yourself extra time.
Where should I park?
General parking is available along Main Street, behind Smoke on the Water and Mellow Mushroom, across from the Liberty Bridge, and in the County Square parking lot. There will be designated spots available at the Governor’s School.
I am unable to walk for long distances. Is there somewhere closer I can park?
Meet at the County Square parking lot closest to the corner of University Ridge and Howe Streets. A shuttle will run from there directly to the worship site from 10:00 - 10:30 AM and immediately following the service. Contact Amy Malik, 282.3117, with questions.
Will restrooms be available?
Public restrooms for the park are available below Passerelle Bistro. Don’t worry, we’ll have directional signs to show you the way!
Will food be available?
Water and drinks will be available before and during the service. After the service, the Chuck Truck and the Henry's Smokehouse food truck will be available for lunch!
Where will I sit?
You will sit in the natural amphitheater facing the Shakespeare stage. Bring a blanket or chair.
Will visitors be able to follow along if there are no BCPs or hymnals?
A service bulletin will be provided that includes all the liturgy and music.
Will there be Eucharist?
Will there be an offering?
Yes. You may bring your pledge envelope or a check.
Will there be separate children’s programming?
No. The service is casual. Children of all ages are welcome.
Will childcare be available at the Church?
No, childcare will not be offered at Christ Church during the service at Gospel in the Park.
What if it is raining?
If it is raining, we will meet in the Church at 10:30 AM. Please check the website or call the Church at 271.8773.
Will there still be a 10:30 AM service in the Church?
No, this service replaces the 10:30 AM service in the Church. The 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM services will be held at Christ Church in Markley Chapel.
May we invite friends?
Yes! If you have ever wanted to invite someone to church but weren’t sure how to do it or were worried they wouldn't like or it would be overwhelming, this is a great chance for you to invite your friends to a newcomer-friendly community service. Everyone will receive a bulletin complete with explanations of the various parts of the service and the music, and Falls Park makes it a beautiful, casual setting. Invite your friends to join us! (Here's a fun video on what NOT to do!)
