Composer Robert J Powell at Christ Churchs organ console

Born 1932, in Benoit, Mississippi, Powell earned his Bachelor of Music in Organ & Composition from Louisiana State University in 1954 and his Master of Sacred Music from Union Theological Seminary School of Sacred Music, New York where he met a fellow organist who became his wife, Nancy. He holds Certificates of Fellow (FAGO) and Choirmaster (ChM) from the American Guild of Organists and is a member of American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). In 1989, Louisiana State University School of Music awarded Powell Alumnus of the Year and in 2021, he was named Christ Church Episcopal’s Organist & Choirmaster Emeritus.

Donald W. Duncan, current Organist/Choirmaster at Christ Church and co-chair of the Powell Scholarship & Organ Competition said “Bob’s generosity of spirit as well as his contributions to the musical life of our parish, the Episcopal Church, and the Greenville community are unparalleled. I look forward to congratulating Bob and Nancy on their many years of Christian witness and service through the gift of sacred music.”

To honor the Powell’s legacy, the Greenville Chapter of the American Guild of Organists has established a scholarship fund and organ competition. The first scholarship will be awarded in June 2023 to an undergraduate student studying organ at an American college, conservatory, or university, in pursuit of a career in organ performance, church music, or music education. The winner of the competition will also be offered an opportunity to travel to Greenville and play a recital on the organs at Christ Church.

The Robert & Nancy Powell Scholarship will officially launch in a celebratory concert on June 4 featuring nearly 100 singers from various churches in Greenville and across Upstate South Carolina performing music for choir and organ composed or arranged by Powell.
