Well Words Wednesday: Building a Foundation for Wellness with Daily Scripture Reading

Have you ever noticed how a few minutes with a comforting verse can shift your entire day? Daily scripture reading is a foundation not just of spiritual growth, but for our mental health, emotional resilience, and meaningful living. Let’s look at each domain of wellness to understand the benefits of daily scripture reading for our overall well being.

Mental Health/Thoughts

Scripture provides a foundation for a shift in our perception of our circumstances. This shift can be transformative. The verses below highlight the importance of aligning our thoughts with spiritual truths to experience transformation and wellness.

  • Romans 12:2: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
  • 2 Corinthians 10:5: “We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Some verses remind us to focus on positive thoughts.

  • Philippians 4:8: “Whatever is true... think about such things.”
  • Proverbs 17:22: “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”

Scripture provides us with cognitive clarity and builds mental strength. Wisdom passages, such as Proverbs, offer practical guidance for making wise decisions. Engaging in Scripture reading sharpens focus and strengthens discipline. The process of memorizing Scripture acts as a cognitive workout—enhancing memory, flexibility, and neuroplasticity. It can even help prevent cognitive decline in older adults.

2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

Emotional Health/Feelings

Daily engagement with scripture fosters inner peace and reduces anxiety. Verses like Philippians 4:6–7 help redirect anxious thoughts into prayer, producing peace that "surpasses all understanding."

  • Philippians 4:6-7  “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Meditating on scripture can create a sense of calm and restoration by bringing us into closer relationship with God.

  • Matthew 11:28–30: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
  • Psalm 23:3: “He refreshes my soul.”

Reading scripture daily can lay a solid foundation and provide comfort during times of hardship, loss, and challenges.

  • 2 Thessalonians 3:16 “Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in all ways. The Lord be with all of you.”
  • Revelation 21:4 “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
for the first things have passed away.”
  • Isaiah 41:10 “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you; I will help you;
I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.”

Spiritual Health

Reading scripture daily deepens our intimacy with God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

  • Joshua 1:8: "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success".
  • Psalm 119:105: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path".

It strengthens our spiritual habits.

  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17: "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work".
  • Colossians 3:16:"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God".
  • James 1:22:"But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves".

Social and Relationship Health

Reading and meditating on scripture daily lays the foundation for building healthy relationships at home, in our church. and in our community. Participating in Bible study groups, worship services, church activities, and outreach in our community helps us to define our purpose.

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:11 Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.
  • Romans 5:10 “love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor.
  • Ephesians 4:2-3 “with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace…”

Scripture guides us in determining the best use of our gifts to glorify Him and serve others.

  • 1 Peter 4:10-11 “Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.”

Physical Health

Studies have shown that those who regularly read the Bible tend to pursue healthier lifestyle choices and experience fewer harmful behaviors.

  • 1 Corinthians 3:16 “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?”
  • 1 Corinthians 6: 19-20 “ Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price; therefore, glorify God in your body.”

One study found that engaging with Scripture 4 or more times a week correlated with striking reductions in loneliness, anger, and addictions, while promoting faith-sharing and discipleship.

  • 1 Corinthians 10:31 “So, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.”

I encourage you to set aside some time to read and meditate on scripture each day and see what a difference it will make in your overall wellness.
