History

A walk through the churchyard is like a walk through history, as you see the names of former clergy, church members, and former mayors. Also interred are Vardry McBee, the post-Civil War provisional Governor Benjamin Franklin Perry, his son, US Congressman William H. Perry, and US Senator Joseph H. Earle.

Our current focus is to re-establish and develop the grounds of the Church, so the campus will complement and enhance the beautiful, historic church buildings in the heart of Greenville. These significant beautification efforts are led by a volunteer Grounds Committee with completion expected in the next several years.

To enable us to explore and search the dynamic ownership records of the cemetery, a churchyard website was completed in the Fall of 2010 and given to the church by Crawford B. Lewis, a dedicated parishioner, as his Eagle Scout Project. A map of the churchyard can be found in the Business Office and is available for viewing and locating cemetery sites.

Historical Tours of the church, chapel, and churchyard are given several times a year. For more information on upcoming tours, please call 864.271.8773.
