In 1979, Father Lafontant met and formed a partnership with the Rt. Rev. William A. Beckham, sixth bishop of Upper South Carolina. Over the next 40-plus years our relationship with Father Lafontant and the people of Cange has continued to deepen. Father Lafontant’s vision and leadership were instrumental in the creation of the village water system, the Ecole Bon Sauveur primary and secondary schools, and organizations such as Partners in Health, Partners in Agriculture, and Clemson Engineers for Developing Countries. Father Lafontant was a great man who cared deeply for his people. He touched the lives of many at Christ Church, who went to Haiti to help out, but who returned themselves changed and greatly enriched by the experience. He will be greatly missed. For those wishing to offer a memorial in his name please consider the diocesan Cange Endowment Fund. Donations may be sent to the Diocesan House business office, 1115 Marion St. Columbia, SC 29601 to the Haiti Cange Fund number 2016 in Father Lafontant’s name.
